The Brazilian P1 Coronavirus variant infected hundreds of Americans

The coronavirus variant behind the world’s worst coronavirus outbreak in Brazil is increasing in the United States, new data shows. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the P1 variant first identified in Brazil is now the second most common variant in the United States, with at least 434 people infected. Most of the cases were recorded in Florida, Massachusetts and Illinois. The CDC says that the P1 variant can spread more easily and faster than other variants, which could lead to more cases of COVID-19. Laboratory tests have so far suggested that the approved vaccines are likely to work against P1, but possibly with reduced efficacy. The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported 4,195 COVID-19 deaths in one day earlier this week, and the out-of-control pandemic is described by health experts as a ‘biological Fukushima’.
