SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom was released in 2003, and although critics’ reviews were mixed, the game got enough of a cult following to receive a remake last year. The ‘Rehydrated’ version is already available on all major consoles and computers, but now a mobile port is on the way, thanks to developer HandyGames.
Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated was developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic, but the mobile version is created by another THQ studio, HandyGames. A preview is available that recorded the footage from an unknown phone, and it looks pretty close to the PC and console versions. The game costs $ 9.99, without in-app purchases or ads, and the description for the trailer states that controllers will be supported.
Handy games confirmed in a tweet that the multiplayer mode is not available, but in addition it must closely follow the Rehydrated version on other platforms. Fight for Bikini Bottom to collect you by collecting objects and defeating robots that have invaded Bikini Bottom (home of SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends) while also navigating 3D platforming sections and various puzzles. The remake currently sits on Metacritic at 69/100 (for the PC version).
The Android version is now available for pre-registration in the Google Play Store. It must arrive on January 21.
