Our moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive commentary to a general readership. By approving submissions, we provide a space where readers can share intelligent and informed commentary that improves the quality of our news and information.
Although most comments will be posted if they are topical and not offensive, moderate decisions are subjective. We will make them as careful and consistent as we can. Due to the amount of reader comments, we are unable to review individual readers’ moderation decisions.
We appreciate thoughtful comments that suggest a variety of views that make their opinion quickly and politely. We strive to protect discussions from repeated comments by the same reader or by different readers
We follow the same standards of taste as the daily newspaper. A few things we will not tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, blasphemy (including expressions and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, imitations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING. Do not include URLs to websites.
We do not edit comments. It is approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment quoted or excerpted in an article. In this case, we can correct spelling and punctuation.
We welcome strong opinions and criticisms of our work, but we do not want comments to become entangled with discussions of our policies, and we will be moderated accordingly.
We appreciate it if readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts indicate factual or emphatic errors and will investigate all allegations. However, these suggestions should be emailed. In order not to draw the attention of other readers, we will not publish comments that indicate a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or in an article.
