Vince Clemente of the Classic Tetris World Championship team reached Shacknews shortly before. He has issued the following statement, which will soon appear on the Classic Tetris World Championship website.

It is with broken hearts that we share that Jonas Neubauer, 7-time CTWC champion, passed away suddenly on January 4th.

Jonas was an absolute pillar of positivity and humility for our CTWC family. We could never have asked for a bigger champion, role model and friend. He was friendly, genuine, hilarious, incredibly talented and a brilliant ambassador for the game. While he was the biggest final boss, he always had the warmest heart. He will live on as a legend for our community and many others around the world.

Jonas, we miss you, we love you, and we thank you for inspiring us to always be our best.

Rest in peace our mighty hero.

The 38-year-old Neubauer has been participating in the professional Classic Tetris track since 2010. Shacknews was privileged to speak to the seven-time champion at the Classic Tetris World Championships in 2019, where he talked about his competitive career, his love. of Tetris, the pressure to compete against a rising new crop of players, and his appearance in ABC’s To Tell The Truth.

Shacknews will monitor this story as it develops. We would also like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Neubauer’s family, including his wife Heather Ito.

Ozzie has been playing video games since he picked up his first NES controller at the age of five. He has since participated in games, but only walked away for a short while during his years of study. But he was withdrawn after spending years in QA circles for THQ and Activision, and mostly spent time promoting the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a huge fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters and RPGs, to name just a few genres, but he’s also a big fan of anything with a good, compelling story behind it. Because what are video games if you can not enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
