Thanks Apex Legends: I can easily admire my cool guns again in the middle of a game

Respawn has added a new Survival Slot Button option to the settings in Apex Legends. This means that users of the controller can now use the d-path again to investigate their weapon.

In the Chaos Theory update, Respawn added a brand new item to Apex Legends: the heat shield. In addition to the mobile baking pole, this item goes into a new slot in your inventory in the game, called the survival slot.

When the slot is first added, it is automatically linked to the d-pad input previously used for weapon and heirloom inspection. People on the mouse and keyboard can easily convert the inspection prompt to another key or mouse button, but people on the controllers have just as many buttons. Thus, the inspection of arms and heirlooms was affixed to the pen wheel.

This therefore meant that adding the survival slot, unless you had a controller with extra paddles to work with, removed your ability to easily admire your firearm or heirloom in the middle of a match. It’s not very important in a battle royale, but it was a fun pastime while hiding in the corner or a way to show the team you just killed when they visited you.

Now, with the new option, people can choose on controllers whether they want the d-path input to have access to the survival slot or the inspection prompt. If the option is off, you have to open your stock manually to use heat shields or mobile baking trays, similar to what you had to do before ultimate accelerators. But if the option is disabled, you can use the d-path again to examine your weapon or heirloom.

The compromise, of course, is that it’s easier to hit the d-pad quickly instead of stopping to open your menu – that’s the key to a fast-paced game like Apex Legends. If you like to quickly call down mobile beacons while sliding in the cover or throwing out a heat shield while outwitting a hostile group, then the Survival Slot Button option is enabled.
