Texas reports 16,027 new COVID-19 cases as hospitals reach record high for the fifth consecutive day

Across Texas, there were 16,027 more COVID-19 cases and 334 deaths were reported Friday. The state has now reported 1,772,483 cases and 27,771 deaths since the pandemic began in March.

According to The Associated Press, Texas also reached a new record high for the fifth consecutive day for patients hospitalized with COVID-19. There were 12,481 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 3,743 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Of the new cases reported Friday, 12,369 were confirmed and 3,658 likely. The state has reported 1,563,758 confirmed cases and 208,725 probable cases since the onset of the pandemic.

The state also added 139 older confirmed cases and 145 older probable cases recently reported by labs.

The average seven-day positivity rate across the country for molecular tests, based on the date a test sample was collected, was 21.15% as of Thursday. State health officials said the use of data based on when people were tested was the most accurate percentage.

For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 13.78%.

Dallas county

Dallas County did not report new data on Friday due to the New Year holiday. The province will again share the COVID-19 figures on Saturday.

As of Thursday, the province had 172,165 confirmed cases and 21,153 probable cases. The province recorded 1,628 COVID-19 deaths.

Tarrant county

Tarrant County also did not report new figures on Friday and will resume on Saturday.

As of Thursday, Tarrant County had seen a total of 150,004 cases – 131,146 confirmed and 18,858 likely. There were 108,969 repairs. The province’s death toll stood at 1,494.

According to Thursday’s numbers on the provincial dashboard, a record 1,399 people were admitted to hospital with the virus.

Collin county

The state added 970 cases of coronavirus and three new COVID-19 deaths on Friday. The province has now posted 49,393 cases and has a death toll of 373.

No details about the latest victims were available.

Of the new cases, 803 were confirmed and 167 likely. Collin County recorded 44,171 confirmed cases and 5,222 probable cases. According to state data, the province has 4,513 active cases.

The province’s coronavirus dashboard offers only total hospitalizations, which was at 513.

Denton county

Denton County did not report new data at 4 p.m.

As of Thursday, the province had a total of 39,182 cases, including 12,922 active and 26,046 recoveries. The death toll stood at 214.

On Thursday, 202 COVID-19 patients were admitted to the hospital, the country reported.

Other provinces

The Texas Department of Public Health has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some provinces, new data is not reported every day.

  • Rockwall County: 6,270 cases (5,208 confirmed and 1,062 likely), 54 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 9,306 cases (8,125 confirmed and 1,181 likely), 122 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 13,261 cases (11,675 confirmed and 1,586 probable), 175 deaths.
  • Johnson County: 11,135 cases (9,872 confirmed and 1,263 likely), 162 deaths.
