DALLAS Texas on Monday reported more than 10,000 new cases of COVID-19 and another 46 deaths due to the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
The number of Texans hospitalized with COVID-19 rose from Sunday to 13,858 Monday. Coronavirus hospitalizations remain at their record high and intensive care units in several regions are at or near capacity, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The department reported another 10,110 confirmed cases of the virus on Monday, as well as 695 probable cases.
According to Johns Hopkins University data, more than 17% of coronavirus tests tested positive in Texas in the past week. The state has recorded more than 2 million cases of the virus and more than 32,000 deaths.
It is believed that the actual number of cases is much higher because many people have not been tested yet and some who get sick do not show symptoms.
More than 1 million Texans have received a dose of coronavirus vaccine, according to health officials, and more than 166,000 have been fully vaccinated.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with pre-existing health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
