More than 4.4 million customers are without power in Texas.
City officials in Abilene, Texas, announced Monday night that all city water services have been shut down due to the historic winter storm and cold.
The city water services were suspended at 19:00 local time “due to power outages by both power sources [the] water treatment plants, ”the city said in a statement.
Officials said they did not know when power and water would be turned on again.
When the water was restored, the city said residents should boil water before using it.
Abilene, located about three hours west of Dallas, has a population of more than 123,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Hours before the water was shut off, officials asked residents to use only “essential” water because the city’s supplies had become dangerously low.
“Your efforts to save water will help the city ensure continued water services. If you do not restrict use, the water service will be lost,” the city said in a statement earlier Monday. “Let go of baths, showers and other non-living uses. Use only water to drink and cook.”
Abilene and much of Texas are still without power as the state handles record colds.
“If you are currently experiencing an outage, you are likely to be out of power for an extended period of time while this state of emergency persists,” AEP Texas, a utility company, said in a statement Monday.
As of 22:00 ET, more than 4.4 million customers are without power in Texas.
