Tesla’s new steering wheel features automatic pilot sensor-based ride modes, touch buttons and more

Tesla’s new steering wheel in the Model S and Model X comes with more than meets the eye.

Electrek has managed to learn more details about Tesla’s new innovative product.

New Tesla Model S and Model X

Tesla today unveiled its highly anticipated new refresh Model S and Model X 2021.

The new electric vehicles have powered drives and battery packs with the latest technology from Tesla – which in some cases overtakes Model 3 and Model Y and in other cases surpasses.

But the most anticipated change is the interior design, which has received a complete overhaul.

The first impressions are mixed, as some of the features are polishing – not just the new steering wheel.

Tesla new steering wheel

Tesla introduces a brand new steering wheel in the new Model S and Model X.

In the new configurator, Tesla describes the new steering wheel that has no shaft:

‘The ultimate focus on management: no straws, no move. With a steeringless yoke, you can enjoy the best car to drive, as well as the best car to drive. ‘

Previously, Tesla, like most other vehicles, used stems on its steering wheel for turn signals, headlights and windshield wipers, and unlike other car manufacturers, Tesla even used handlebars for other control panels such as Autopilot and Drive Mode (PRND).

Tesla’s new steering wheel has none of that, because the steering column is not equipped with any shaft.

Rather, it’s packaged in a streamlined butterfly steering wheel design:

In order to replace the stems, Tesla bet on a mix of AI and force touch buttons on the steering wheels to replace these features.

The steering wheel is equipped with the same scrolls already found on the Model 3 and Model Y wheel, but it now includes new power touch buttons for the flashing lights, large beams, base, autopilot, windshield control and voice commands:

Ultimately, Tesla hopes that all of these features will be performed automatically by the vehicle.

The strategy is especially shown by Tesla’s solution to replace the propulsion mode (PRND).

Electrek has obtained internal Tesla documents showing that the carmaker plans to use Autopilot and AI to know which drive mode to activate.

Tesla writes in the document:

“The vehicle uses its Autopilot sensors to determine and select the intended driving modes intelligently and automatically. For example, if the front of Model S / X looks at a garage wall, it will detect it and automatically shift to Reverse as soon as the driver presses the brake pedal. This eliminates another step for the drivers of the most intelligent production cars in the world. ”

This is a big change in the way a car can be driven, but Tesla makes sure people are not too confused about it by the touch buttons for ‘Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive’ driving modes at the bottom of the phone charger to add. on the center console.

We first reported on some of the technology based on a patent that Tesla filed last year.
