On Friday, news spread with fake headlines and a false report that Elon Musk had passed away.

What happened: Elon Musk and #RIPELON were both popular topics Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) Friday.

People did the rounds false reports which is doctored to look like Fox News articles and official statements from Tesla Ing (NASDAQ: TSLA), according to Snopes.com.

According to reports, Musk died in an explosion in lithium batteries and Tesla would look for a new CEO.

“Mr Musk tragically died early this morning from a lithium battery explosion,” reads a Tesla doctoral statement.

The false report states that Tesla’s market share may decline and the company will only notify its major investors. The false headlines and report could have been an attempt to lower Tesla’s share price.

TSLA Price Action: Tesla shares fell 3.39% to $ 600.38 before closing on Friday.
