Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) – Elon Musk says Tesla will become one of the world’s largest AI companies, indicating that Google is far ahead

Tesla Ing (NASDAQ: TSLA) is working hard to bring autonomy to their electric vehicle fleet. The cars have all the hardware needed for autonomous driving, but the software needs to work to catch up. Tesla currently has a limited release of their “Full Self Driving Beta” software available for a small set of testers.

CEO Elon Musk responded on Twitter, saying he believes Tesla will become one of the largest AI companies in the world. This is related to Tesla’s autonomous vehicle approach. Musk said “… it seems that the only way to solve self-government is to solve a large part of the actual AI,” as we respond to Tesla’s self-government work.

Musk also said: “Unless a business is good at AI with a rigorous computer, it’s hopeless. It’s insanely difficult.”

Many companies work on autonomous vehicles. Most companies use a combination of LiDAR, cameras and radar. Tesla is going to remove radar from the equation and use only cameras.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), works on autonomous vehicles that use many different sensors. Waymo has vehicles that currently act as a taxi without a driver, but the service was closed in a small area in Phoenix, Arizona.

Musk seems to believe that Google is also making progress in AI. While not naming them directly, he said: “A company whose name rhymes with Shmoogle’s is pretty far ahead,” referring to artificial intelligence. Google has created software like DeepMind and AlphaGo, impressive demonstrations of AI in real and theoretical situations.
