Tesla introduces new images of its battery cell production and wants to rent new factories

Tesla has released a new video with new images of its battery cell production in Fremont, California, because it wants to hire more people to repeat the production lines at new factories in Germany and Texas.

Tesla 4680 battery harness

On its Battery Day in September 2020, Tesla unveiled its new 4680 battery cell and how it plans to manufacture the larger and tableless cell itself – something the carmaker has not tried before.

While Tesla has previously been involved in the development of new battery cells, the automaker has always relied on suppliers, such as Panasonic, to manufacture the cells for its electric vehicles.

But to create a larger cell format with more energy capacity and lower costs, Tesla had to design new manufacturing processes and reconsider the production of battery cells.

During the unveiling of its new cells, Tesla claimed that it would increase the energy density fivefold and increase the power sixfold, while reducing the cost per kWh by about half.

Production of Tesla batteries

During the event, Tesla confirmed that it was already manufacturing the cells in low volume at a “pilot plant” in Fremont.

Although only a ‘test plant’, Tesla still aims to have an annual production capacity of 10 GWh at the plant, which will produce more cells than many battery factories around the world.

The automaker aims to achieve this production capacity by the end of the year and use its knowledge on the line, which consists of many new manufacturing machines internally designed by Tesla, to use much greater battery power production capacity at new factories.

As we reported earlier, Gigafactory Berlin would have to be Tesla’s first site for the full production of 4680 batteries.

Tesla currently plans to 250 GWh of the production of batteries in the factory.

Tesla now introduces new images of battery production at its pilot plant in Fremont:

With the new images, Tesla promotes its battery manufacturing space and encourages people to apply for new jobs in Berlin and Texas, where Tesla also plans to manufacture new battery cells.

The car manufacturer writes:

To make the transition to sustainable energy, we need to produce more affordable cars and energy storage, while building factories faster and with much less investment. The key to this is the production of terawatt batteries and many more affordable battery cells.

Tesla wants to tackle the challenges of cell engineering, manufacturing, materials, equipment and operations, with the aim of creating a ‘vertically integrated team’.

Instead of posting job lists, Tesla encourages people to submit their resumes directly through the minisite.

However, we previously reported that Tesla has started listing jobs for its first full-scale battery cell factory.
