Terraria developer cancels Stadia version after Google Account is excluded

Terraria developer cancels Stadia version after Google Account is excluded

February 8, 2021 03:17 by NewsDesk

The co-creator of Terraria stopped developing the game for Google Stadiums after a three week stretch where he was inexplicably excluded from all his Google accounts.

Andrew Spinks set the ultimatum early Monday after receiving no response from Google since YouTube locked him out of his account in mid-January. The lockout also cost Spinks access to apps he bought on Google Stadiums, erased data he stored on Google Drive, and terminated a Gmail account he had been using for more than 15 years.

I did absolutely nothing to violate your Terms of Service, so I can only do so unless you decide to burn this bridge. Consider it burnt. # Terraria for @GoogleStadia be canceled. My company no longer supports any of your platforms to move forward.

– Andrew Spinks (@Demilogic) 8 February 2021

Spinks said he brought it to Google’s attention around January 16, and the company has since ‘done nothing but give me a chance’. The game’s official Twitter account trying to get YouTube’s attention on the issue back in January, with apparently no help.

Two days ago fans noticed this Terraria received a rating and release date for Google Stadiums from the European PEGI rating agency. The only official word that Terraria was underway for the streaming platform, came Monday with the cancellation announcement of Spinks.

Polygon contacted a Google Stadia representative for an answer to the situation, including an explanation of why Spinks would have closed his accounts in the first place.

Terraria was one of the games available when Google launched its Google Play Pass, basically the Android version of Apple Arcade, in the fall of 2019. Terraria, published by 505 Games, is still available in the Google Play Store.

On February 1, Google announces that it will close Stadia Games and Entertainment Development Studio, offering Stadia as a third-party platform. Stages was launched in November 2019. There are currently about 140 games available for the service.
