Television in Univision merges to compete against ‘streaming’ platforms

Name a new giant of Spanish television. Television and Univision companies announced this March their merger to become the main producer of Spanish-speaking countries. The decision of the two leading companies over the years to land on the ground of the digital platforms, mainly Netflix, which in the near future will bring the 48 million subscriptions in Latin America. Univision, for its part, will pay 3,000 million dollars effectively and another 1,500 in combined actions that Television will use to reduce its debt. The announcement has saved more than 8% the price of the TV actions, owned by the Mexican family Azcárraga from decades ago. The merger will have to be approved by the Mexican and United States regulators, although the shareholders will agree that the operation will end this year.

The operation is also underway with the $ 1,000 million unversional impetus for actions taken by SoftBank and Univision’s current inversionist, ForgeLight LLC. Emilio Azcárraga Jean, the executive director of Televisa, said that the union “will allow more efficient ways to all the Spanish audience” with the current contents. Only 10% of the Spanish population is subscribed to a high-demand content platform when the number of subscribers in the Anglo-Saxon market is 70%.

Wade Davis, Univision’s CEO, will lead the combined company that will summon the brave right of Azcárraga, Alfonso de Angoitia, to the chair of the Board of Directors. The Vice President will be Marcelo Claure, CEO of SoftBank International.

Television and Univision have a long history, for 20 years, working together. In 2017, more solidarity will be established between the media in the wake of the rapid transformation of the industry through the outbreak of Netflix in Hispanic countries. This year, the Mexican regulator approved up to 49% of the common shares between the two. Univision is the main producer of many television content, owned by a well-known chain of advertising startups and a 55% increase in market value.
