Telegram for iOS has been updated with new features like clubhouse and voice chats

The popular messaging application Telegram has been updated today with an emphasis on audio communication. The latest version of Telegram for iOS offers a new version of the app’s Voice Chats feature with a handful of enhancements.

Telegram first introduced voice chat support in December, and today’s update introduces version 2.0 of the features. The first important change here is that channel managers and public groups can now hold ‘chats’ for millions of listeners.

This feature is very similar to Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces. You can create a public link for the audio conversation, then share it with other people and invite them to join the audio conversation. Telegram explains:

Channel and public group admins can now host voice chats for millions of live listeners. Admins of public groups and channels can now create invitation links that open the voice chat immediately. Separate links can be made for speakers and listeners. This way you do not have to mute important guests when they join – and they can use another link to promote the upcoming chat in their communities.

To start a Voice Chat, open the profile of any group or channel where you are an admin, tap (⋮) or (⋯) and select Start Voice Chat.

The update also provides support for recording conversations. Admins can now record voice calls to save them for later, and then publish to people who missed the call to listen back. Telegram notes that chats recorded are marked with a red light next to the title.

To complement this new voice chat platform, Telegram has made a few other changes:

In conversations where the participants are muffled, listeners can tap to raise their hand and warn the drivers that they want to talk.

Your bio-text is now visible in the participant list, which you can use to discuss your expertise, interests or just a little about you. This information can help administrators find a good place for your questions or comments.

When you enter a voice chat in a channel, users have the option to join their personal account or appear as one of their channels. Celebrities and public figures can use this to prevent them from paying too much attention to their personal accounts.

The latest version of Telegram is now available for free in the App Store. It also contains other bug fixes and performance improvements.
