Tehran faces power outages due to massive Crypto mining operations consuming up to 450 Megawatts, and so much power could boost a city of 100,000 people

Everyone already knows that crypto-miners on top of the existing shortages are causing a shortage of the latest graphics cards, but now large-scale mining farms are causing power outages. In Iran, authorities have investigated the cause of power outages and found the cause is that GPU mines consume large amounts of power.

Mining has become so bad that cities are experiencing power outages due to insane power consumption during major mining operations

It’s not just an average mining farm run by a miner; these are complete industrial activities that have moved from China to Iran. In Iran, power is produced at 1.8 cents per kilowatt hour and sold to the public more than ten times, but the miners can get it for 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour. Not even China can match those prices, so miners have moved their operations to Tehran because it is the most cost-effective.

After investigations, the Iranian authorities concluded that there are 14 huge crypto-mining operations in Iran that consume 300 megawatts but can consume up to 450 megawatts at full capacity. For reference, so much power can provide in a city with a population of 100,000 people. All this makes Iran the 6th most popular destination for crypto-mining in the world.

The maps used on the mining farms are not specially built maps; these are normal consumer cards. Many people were suspicious of Nvidia and its partners selling cards directly to miners, and Nvidia did not say anything about it, so we assume they are not opposed to it. Now laptops are even being bought up to utilize their GPU in mining operations. At this point, miners will be trying everything with a modern GPU in it to get their hands on it.

This is an unfortunate time for people trying to build a computer as it is almost impossible to get hold of a GPU due to the original shortage which is now worse with a boom in crypto mining as well as tariffs which increases prices. Not only do you have to compete with scalpers, but you also have to compete with miners to get the latest graphics cards, and hope that Nvidia and its partners do not sell them directly to miners.
