Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen are ‘still in love’ after 25 years of marriage, while discussing keeping the romance alive during quarantine

They know a thing or two to keep the magic alive.

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen admitted that they were ‘still in love’ after 25 years of marriage when they graced the cover of PEOPLE’s first annual Love Issue.

The couple reflected on their relationship after being quarantined for the past nine months amid the global pandemic in their Los Angeles home.

Before their socially distant photo shoot, Mary, 67, admitted that “they have been alone for the last nine months, except today.”

She added: “And we decided to stay together.”

Danson, 73, said: ‘We can choose every morning. This is a rule. ‘

The couple first met when he auditioned to play her husband in the ’83 movie ‘Cross Creek’ – and did not get the role.

“It’s a miracle, because then I was a mess,” he admitted before Steenburgen added: “I was married. He is married. This was not our moment. ‘

By the time they reunited years later over the movie ‘Pontiac Moon’ from ’93, we had both sworn relationships, ‘Steenburgen said.

“We both said the same phrase to ourselves, ‘Obviously we can’ t be in a relationship, ‘” Danson recalls. “I can ruin anything. I’m not relationship material.”

He has just ended a public relationship with Whoopi Goldberg and finalized his divorce from his second wife, Casey Coates.

“There is no cavity in my heart where I do not love him, or where I doubt this love,” Steenburgen said. “There’s no secret place where I say we’re not supposed to spend a thousand percent of our lives together.”

Her initial reactions were ‘the dude looks complicated’, but both felt an attraction. “I was not ready for something like a relationship,” she added. “We just kept working together and became better and better friends.”

After a romantic outdoor adventure in Mendocino, California, the couple were inseparable.

“It was very magical,” the Good Place star said. “We honestly fell in love again, otherwise I say defeated.”

With four children in their mixed family – she has two children from her first marriage to Malcom McDowell, while he has two daughters by his second wife – ‘enjoy’ the life they have created together.

“I want to have Mary with me for as long as possible,” Danson said. “I know it will have all its hard parts, but I want to experience love in all those moments.”

“Not to sound like corn, but I would sign up a hundred more times,” Steenburgen said.

‘There is no void in my heart where I do not love him, or where I doubt this love. There is no secret place where I say that we were not one thousand percent supposed to spend our lives together. ‘

“I want to be with Mary for as long as possible in my life,” Danson said. “I know it will have all its hard parts, but I want to experience love in all those moments.” (seen in 2018)
