Major League Baseball would lose its decades-old antitrust release, two U.S. senators from the Republic said Friday night.
American sense. Texas’ Ted Cruz and Utah’s Mike Lee both responded after MLB announced it would move this year’s All-Star Game and 2021 draft out of Georgia over its new voting law.
“Why does @MLB still have antitrust immunity?” Lee tweeted. “It is time for the federal government to stop granting special privileges to specific, beneficiary corporations – especially those who punish their political opponents.”
In his message, Lee again tweeted a message from U.S. Representative Jeff Duncan, RS.C., promising to take similar action in the U.S. House.

Cruz then added that he and Lee would ‘work hard to end MLB’s antitrust immunity’.
MLB’s release of antitrust applies since a Supreme Court ruling in 1922 that the league is a sport and not a business. The National Football League, National Basketball Association and National Hockey League do not have the same exemption.

The league has made the decision to relocate the All-Star Game from the Atlanta area after pressure from those who say the voting law, which is meant to make elections safer by requiring ID for consent among other changes, is actually intended is around the voice.
The game was to be played in July at Truist Park in Cobb County, Ga., Just outside Atlanta, home of the Atlanta Braves. No new location has been announced yet.
The new election law comes months after President Biden’s victory over former President Trump in the state last November and a democratic battle in the US Senate by-elections in January.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement on Friday: “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and is against ballot box restrictions,” adding: “I have decided that the best way to uphold our values demonstrating as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft. ”

Other companies in Georgia, such as Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines, have also criticized the law.
