Teachers, childcare workers, more high-risk Vermonters eligible next week March 2, 2021 04:51 by NewsDesk With the vaccination of Johnson & Johnson and the federal pharmacy program, Governor Phil Scott announced Tuesday that school staff, child care workers and more Vermonters with high-risk conditions are eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine from next week. . Phase 5 of the state’s vaccination program will open on March 8, Scott said, which will include Vermonters 55 years and older. From 15 March, those with the same high-risk conditions of 16 years and older will be eligible. School staff and child care workers will also be eligible on March 8th. More information on how to register will be announced on Friday. School-based vaccination clinics will deliver the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but school staff and child care workers will also have access to the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines through the state’s partnership with Walgreens. Administrative officials said they expected all school staff to be vaccinated by the first weeks of April. “These are important steps forward, and with more supply, Vermonters can be optimistic that we’re on the right track to be in a very good place by late spring or early summer,” Scott said. Scott’s government has urged local district officials to reopen schools in full, and the governor said he wants to see every K-12 student in the class five days a week in April. Educators responded that mitigation measures should not be relaxed without school staff and teachers being, at the very least, extra protected. ‘No one wants to see students return to the state’s classrooms anymore as teachers, para-educators, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, guardians, school nurses and administrators. But, as we have been saying all along, this can only happen if it is demonstrably safe to do so. “Vaccination of school workers is a big step in the right direction,” Don Tinney, president of Vermont-NEA, said in a statement.
