Actress son of actress Tatum O’Neal and tennis icon John McEnroe married Niamh on September 29 in Sedona, Arizona. The wedding comes after Niamh moved into Sean’s home in LA in early 2019.
In a statement to PEOPLE, McEnroe, 32, explains why they kept the marriage private for several months.
“We have decided to keep it private until now. We’ve been through a lot of challenges and problems over the last year, “says McEnroe. Niamh was pregnant in the fall but lost the baby at the end of her first trimester. It was destructive, but in the end it made us closer and stronger. And our band is better than it ever was. ‘
McEnroe posted the news on Instagram with a loving message about Niamh and their relationship.

McEnroe remembered how Niamh was there for him after he had ‘one of the worst breakdown points in my life’ just after they moved in together.
“I can not remember exactly what launched me, but it was something related to my family and traumas from my childhood,” he said. “It was one of the most challenging emotional experiences I’ve ever had. I remember taking a large crystal and throwing it as hard as possible through a painting, which also went through the wall and a large hole left behind.
“I took a ficus plant and tore it completely to the roots. Niamh was downstairs and walked upstairs to find soil all over the carpet, and I first laid my face in it, crying and screaming, with dirt and leaves left over. my whole face and hair and clothes.
“She began to put the plant back together gently and quietly. She picked up all the broken leaves and stems and wiped all the soil and put it all back in the pot. And after she put everything back together carefully, I did not “Remember what she said, but she rubbed back and spoke very softly, and I let go of the grip I had on one of the trunks. I let go.”

After explaining how Niamh saved the plant and now lives in their bedroom, McEnroe confessed his love for his new wife.
“Niamh has given me a foundation of faith and hope, through her steadfast, steadfast example, a rooted foundation that I was not even close to at the time. Everything I am now, I owe to her. I love you “You are my true love, my foundation and my source of inspiration all in one,” he wrote.

The wedding took place days after Sean posted a lovely photo with his 57-year-old Oscar-winning mother, siblings and acting icon, grandfather Ryan O’Neal (79). In his caption, he reveals that this was the first time the family came together in 17 years.
After thousands of people sent their family the love, Sean told PEOPLE that he did not actually expect the worldwide response the photo received.
‘There are so many people who have been following this family saga for literally 50 years, 40 years. In a time where there is currently so little hope and people are really scared, really overwhelmed and really hard to believe that things are going to get better, there is this family and if anyone knows this family, they know that it is probably the last family that will ever be able to reconcile, ”McEnroe said.
As for his mother’s reaction to his good news, he says: “My mother is happy for me and wants us to have a good and happy life together.”
