Tar Heels Earns 8 NCAA Tournament Selected in 2021

The university basketball season 2020-21 was unlike any other due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of games on a week-to-week basis. While games have been canceled throughout the year, the conference tournaments are officially over and it’s time for the real madness to begin.

Following the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis, the selection committee officially unveiled the series for the 68-team field with their annual special on CBS.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they officially earned an 8-series in the South Region, after playing 18-10 overall and 10-6 in conference. UNC will face Wisconsin no. 9 plays, with the time yet set.

The southern region is difficult, which Baylor no. 1, Ohio State no. 3, Arkansas and Purdue no. 4 include. Villanova as a No. 5 seed is also an interesting team to look at.

Take a look at the bracket below:

The Tar Heels have won three of their last four games participating in the tournament, including Duke and their first two games in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Their lone loss in this four-game series lost a tight spot in the ACC semifinals on Friday.

Getting a No. 8 seed is actually not terrible for a Tar Heels team that has struggled this season, although UNC wanted a No. 7 seed. Only a month ago, they found themselves on the bubble and had to make use of their games. These include defeating Louisville and the Florida States on Saturdays against the back and then with a big home win over Duke.

As UNC have been playing better lately and have shown signs of improvement, this could be a difficult outcome in the tournament. Especially as their greats continue to dominate and the guards get better here in March. More importantly, these players get an NCAA Tournament experience that could be great for future seasons.
