Talking Point: What’s the chance we’ll see a ‘new’ Nintendo Switch in 2021?

Nintendo Questionnaire

What is it? Did anyone say ‘Switch Pro’? Oooh, ‘New Nintendo Switch’, is it !? A more powerful variant with 4K resolution Deep Learning Super Sampling? 60 frames per second? Carbon fiber styling? Swiss Army Switch? …

It wasn’t long after the Switch was launched in 2017, and rumors of a hardware review began to circulate. Mention it, it was suggested by someone, and although we did our best to follow our noses and document credible scuttlebutt regarding a possible revised model of Nintendo’s hand hybrid, the wild speculation of grounded theories based on evidence can be difficult when Nintendo is so full of surprises.

The release of the handheld-only Switch Lite in 2019 sheds some light on SoC review rumors, but even that surprised some spectators. A switch that does not switch !? This is the dumbest idea ever! Ah, wait …

It’s clear that Nintendo has something whether it’s a Switch ‘Pro’ or a ‘New Nintendo Switch’. The current console has surpassed several old-fashioned systems in terms of sale and even surpasses the mighty Wii at the time of writing, and Nintendo will want to keep it.

But will we see a new model this year? Analysts seem to think so, but some of them predicted an upgraded version two years ago. As far as NL is concerned, the opinion is divided. Below we give a few points we discussed, and at the bottom a poll – we’d love to hear your thoughts!

So let’s look at the pros and cons of (Switch) for a possible review of Switch hardware sometime in 2021. We begin with the arguments against …

Not at all!

Nintendo beats quite nicely with these two, thank you very much.
Nintendo beats very nicely with these two, thank you very much.

The naysayers among us believe – reasonably enough – that the impetus to launch a new Switch model this year is simply not there while the regular version is sold under the truck. Simply put, Nintendo does not need a new console to promote interest and anything do can be exercised, is likely to cancel sales of the current model.

This is a centuries-old dilemma for successful hardware makers: when is the best time to sacrifice the golden goose and invest in the future?

if the ‘old’ model continues to sell like hotcakes, there is no reason at all to rush a flashy gate to the market

Given the events of the past year, it is likely that Nintendo’s plans have been postponed by a few months, if not due to production issues, then by evaluating the release schedule after an unpredictable boost in sales. Yes, business is booming and a new console (at least a more powerful one) really needs a new game or two to show it; for example a Zelda or a Metroid Prime 4. If they are not ready yet, and if the ‘old’ model sells like hotcakes, there is no reason at all to rush a flashy gate to the market.

On the subject of the Switches now flying off store shelves, all the millions of people who picked up a new console – maybe a flashy Monster Hunter one or that Red & Blue Super Mario number – might not be too happy if there a month later there is not a shiny new variety they could rather buy.

No, even if Nintendo plans to release a new Switch this year, there is no chance that they will interrupt the sales momentum they are currently running.

Alternatively …

Yes way!

As we have seen with Nintendo’s decades of history of hardware versions, a modest upgrade can work wonders by offering tweaks and enhancements that give avid fans the opportunity to buy something new – sometimes several times – without sacrificing a hard customer base. buy you Animal crosses and yours Mario Kart 8’s. This is the thinking that the families of Nintendo DS and 3DS ‘created from systems, and we already had the first addition to the Switch dynasty with Switch Lite.

a modest upgrade can work wonders by offering tweaks and improvements that give avid fans the opportunity to buy something new – sometimes many times over – without sacrificing a hard customer base

If we look specifically at the 3DS timeline, the XL variant arrived about eighteen months after the original, and the New 3DS was launched just over three and a half years later. Launched in March 2017, Switch launched Switch Lite eighteen months later in September 2019 and the original console will be four years old in a few months. Obviously, we do not compare here as-for-as, thanks to Switch’s hybrid nature, but it’s hard to argue that the beloved launch models picked up by early adopters these days seem a bit tired. The original model is due to a spruce and something more comprehensive than an internal ‘silent’ revision.

And not wanting to kill the momentum of the current model, Nintendo has been in the game long enough to know that you hit while the iron is hot! You turn the flames upright, give people a moment to catch their breath and then hit the slide to eleven! You have to keep the ball rolling! Let go because everything ticks good and bad is not the way to grow in the video game … game.

Hot irons, balls rolling – all aboard the Mixed Metaphor Express: next stop, Switch Pro! You see, we’re throwing a train in there now, too.

And who exactly are these millions of new Switch owners who would go crazy when a new model appeared? That’s just how the half-step console cookie crumbles, we’re scared; it’s the same with any recurring upgrade in the tech world. For stubborn Nintendo fans, yes, natural It would be disappointing to spend money on a console only to have a new model appear a few weeks later, but those hardcore fans bought a Switch a long time ago and they’ll probably be in favor of a Pro model boss . No self-respecting Apple lover would buy a new iPhone at the end of August, right? Early fans are fond of the new taste, and casual players like to play the original or Lite variants.

Yep, mark our words, at some point this year – in October or November we will bet – there will be a new switch on the block. Probably.

For the sake of the record, Nintendo has said they do not plan to release a new Switch model anytime soon, although they specified this time last year that no new model will be launched ‘in 2020’. Considering how careful they are with this kind of language, it can not be inferred that they have planned something for the last half of the year. It’s not ‘soon’, is it?

Either way, it’s clear from all the unbridled rumors that there’s a craving for refreshment in the middle of the cycle. Last year we asked you what features you would like to see in a Switch ‘Pro’, and out of a total of almost 20,000 votes’ a more powerful CPU ‘comes at the top of the list (followed by’ increased resolution ‘and’ a thinner) around the screen). The desire is then there; Nintendo just needs to figure out how to exploit the hunger of fans for something new in a way that is in addition to the current sales problem.

That, and it will need a sweet name. ‘Pro’, ‘New’ – they are done. What about “Nintendo Switch Up”? “Turn on”? “Tune in” …

Quick, let’s go to the polls before it gets worse:

Let us know your thoughts on the potential for a new Switch model this year in the usual place.
