Starting later this year, Taco Bell will begin testing a Beyond Meat-based dish at its restaurants. The chain did not say what the dish will look like, but claims that it is not the normal substitute you have seen from other restaurants, as it will develop the protein along with Beyond Meat. “I would say it’s going to be unique to the things you’ve seen elsewhere, so we’ll definitely use our Taco Bell innovation and turn to it,” said Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global head of food innovation. If you’ve been following the expansion of Beyond Meat (and Impossible Foods), you’ll know that Taco Bell’s late. Some of its competitors, such as KFC and McDonald’s, have been testing plant-based meat substitutes since at least 2019. But it is still an important announcement of the chain, especially since it must win back the vegetarians. During the summer, Taco Bell cut eight items, including vegetarian favorites like the Mexican Pizza, from its menu to simplify operations through the pandemic. That’s why the company is bringing potatoes back on March 11 before the rollout of Beyond Meat. Not every potato dish that is sliced comes back, but you can order more popular dishes like the spicy potato soft taco.
