Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing a new Superman movie for DC and Warner Bros.

Ta-Nehisi Coates will release a new Superman movie for DC Films and Warner Bros.

The project is very early in development, but the new film is produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot. Hannah Minghella will also be producing. There is currently no director associated with the project and the search for an actor to play Kal-El / Superman has not yet begun.

“To be invited by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot into the DC Extended Universe is an honor,” Coates said in a statement. “I look forward to meaningfully adding the legacy of America’s most iconic mythical hero.”

“There’s another new, powerful and gripping Superman story yet to be told. We can no longer be excited to work with the brilliant Mr. Coates to bring the story to the big screen, and we are very grateful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity, ‘Abrams stated.

Coates is the award-winning best-selling author, including ‘Between the World and Me’, ‘The Beautiful Struggle’, ‘We Were Aight Years in Power’ and ‘The Water Dancer’.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates’ ‘Between the World and Me’ has opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We are confident he will give Superman’s fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”

The new Superman project is not the author’s first foray into the superhero empire. Coates also wrote the Marvel comic book series for ‘Captain America’ and ‘Black Panther’, with his run writing the latter saga, which ends in April.

News of Coates’ commitment to the superhero project comes amid a number of recent Hollywood projects and adaptations of the author’s work. ‘Between the World and Me’ was adapted into an HBO film that debuted in November last year, while ‘The Water Dancer’ gets a major adaptation from a production team starring Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt.

Shadow and Act was the first to report the news.
