“During the process of reverse construction of the missing libraries for System Shock 2, we had the opportunity to play with the idea of creating a standalone VR version,” Kick said in an interview with IGN. ‘And so we have a [VR] expert to look at the cod and give us a brief idea of what kind of things we can do. ”With this blueprint, Nightdive found that there was a solid foundation in System Shock 2 to start building a full VR version. Kick says that System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition will be fully playable in VR, along with the game’s multiplayer mode. Thus, collaboration in VR can be played on a platform, where one player can be in VR and another can play on a standard computer.
Kick was also clear that VR is not just a custom extra, but a complete feature. Nightdive works with an outline of how to create a ‘really remarkable, built-in VR experience’.
Nightdive cites the engaging potential of VR as one of the main reasons for pursuing this dedicated mode for System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. ‘If you’re in VR, it’s you who swings the weapons, you’ll reload [the guns] yourself, you do not just push a button and let the character reload the gun automatically. ‘

The team has studied other VR games, and Half-Life: Alyx, which according to Nightdive is a great inspiration, is one title that has set a standard for immersion. ‘[Half-Life: Alyx has] just becomes necessary to create the feeling that you are there … Things like being able to pick up items from a distance is something that was very important in Half-Life: Alyx, and it’s something you will be able to do in System Shock VR too. ”
System Shock 2 is currently VR in the prototype stage, so the VR version will not be released with System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, which is planned to be released with Nightdive’s full version of System Shock.
