Syria’s Assad and wife test positive for coronavirus

The Assads were in a ‘stable state’ and planned to isolate for two or three weeks, the statement said.

Syria has recorded at least 45,879 positive cases of Covid-19 and 2,023 deaths, based on cumulative numbers from several local medical authorities, but it is difficult to get a complete picture of the outbreak in the country.

According to Syria’s state news agency, on March 1, Damascus received its first consignment of vaccines from an unnamed ‘friendly’ country. The name and quantities of the vaccines were not mentioned in the statement.

Other areas in Syria, including rebels and Kurdish places, have not yet received any vaccines.

Assad has been repeatedly accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during Syria’s ongoing war. His government in Damascus has denied the allegations.

The British-born wife of the Syrian president is a high profile who stood by Assad through the civil war. In 2018, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since recovered.
