Switch expands console market, says Interpret

Consumer insights last year saw a huge increase in Switch owners who have no other consoles

Nintendo is expanding the console market with the Switch just like with the Wii, according to a new report from consumer insight agency Interpret.

According to Interpret’s quarterly New Media Measuring survey among 9,000 US consumers, 2020 saw a significant increase in the number of Switch owners, with no other game console in their homes.

Last year, 25% of Switch owners reported that they own no other consoles, more than doubling the 12% of respondents in 2019 who own a Switch, but nothing else.

The Switch also got a second choice on the console, as the number of people owning one other console in addition to the Switch increased from 25% in 2019 to 35% last year.

“We can deduce from this that Nintendo has expanded the overall console pie (as with the original Wii) as new console players enter the market,” said Interpret.
