SAN ANTONIO One of the suspects involved in the shooting of a Balcones Heights police officer is believed to be in custody in Mexico, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Thursday night.

‘Grant you’: Sheriff identifies brothers accused of shooting Balcones Heights police officer

Wilfredo Montemayor, 27, and his brother Sijifredo Montemayor, 30, are facing charges of attempted murder. They are accused of shooting their Balcones Heights police officer. Joey Sepulveda Wednesday in the neck.

Salazar said the BCSO worked 24 hours a day on the case with the help of other law enforcement agencies in Texas, and he believes Tamaulipas police have Sijifredo Montemayor in custody.

“I’m waiting for proof that it even happened,” Salazar said.

The sheriff says Mexican state police were not eager to discuss the matter with him on Thursday, and he will obtain more information from a commander on Friday. He said the BCSO had not confirmed whether Sijifredo Montemayor was in custody.

Salazar said authorities believe Sijifredo Montemayor entered Mexico around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, hours after Sepulveda was shot. The sheriff says family members may have helped Sijifredo escape across the border. However, it is unclear whether the family members knew the sergeant was shot.

The BCSO went to the Montemayor brothers’ family home and asked them to come out voluntarily. Some family members have been arrested, but Salazar says it is unclear whether they will stand trial on any charges.

Officials are still trying to determine if family members who lived in the home helped Sijifredo Montemayor escape to Mexico.

The sheriff seized the vehicle that Sijifredo had taken across the border and will seek more evidence in the case.

Salazar says he is not sure when Sijifredo will be brought from Mexico to the US because he is believed to have also been taken to hospital to receive treatment for a gunshot wound. However, the sheriff says he does not know the seriousness of the suspect’s injury.

“It will not be very easy,” Salazar said of the extradition of Sijifredo Montemayor to Bexar County.

Salazar said Wilfredo Montemayor is still on the run, and he believes he is still in the San Antonio area.
