Surfing duck delights Australian beachgoers during quarantine

Meet the Australian version of the Central Park Mandarin Duck.

A pet duck, named “Duck”, is becoming a surfing phenomenon on the Gold Coast of Australia, where he regularly rides on the waves of Rainbow Bay.

“I would be confident to say that he is the only duck in the world,” owner Kate Miller told the BBC.

Miller adopted the 8-year-old Duck to cheer her up during the coronavirus pandemic – and had no idea she would be raising a local celebrity.

‘I can write a book about people’s reactions. “Everyone is amazed and intrigued, and he always draws a crowd,” Miller said.

The family started bringing Duck to the beach for surfing, and he quickly took to the water.

“We’ll catch a wave and he’s just going to follow us and realize it’s fun,” said Miller, who said Duck loves surfing so much that he hints that Miller is on his way to the beach.

“If we open the bottle of sunscreen, he can really smell it,” Miller said.

Duck is reminiscent of the multicolored Mandarin duck that drew crowds to Central Park Dam in late 2018.
