Supercars for trial press to pass

The category recently published a tender document for an ‘electrical and electronic system’, with one of the requirements being a throttle-based push-and-pass system.

The document reads: ‘Several push-to-pass methods are currently being reviewed, but as a minimum provision is required for a push-to-pass system.

“We will be testing a gas-based push-and-pass system. For this, we need a three-axis acceleration table, which is activated by the push-and-pass switch.”

Supercars hopes to select a winning bidder by February 5 and launch a new electronic package for the 2021 season.

The contract then runs until 2025, which means that the new package will be transferred to the Gen3 era.

The tender document also mentions hybrid possibilities, which are in line with the ‘hybrid ready’ Gen3 regulations.

Supercars are expected to implement a hybrid function once the new rules are in place, with a restored energy-pressure-to-pass system, one of the options being considered.

However, according to the document, there will be no hybrid technology available for the launch of Gen3.

“Hybrid integration is being considered for the [Gen3] project, “reads the document.

“It is not expected to be used until the beginning of 2022. Please provide information regarding ECU integration with batteries, battery management systems (BMS), motor controllers and high voltage power distribution units (PDUs).”

Another important change highlighted by the document is the move move, something that has divided views in the Supercars paddock for some time.

The category currently uses a sequential stick shift.

A successful bidder will be expected to provide a complete steering wheel “with a shift mechanism, including the CAN control system, switches and screen with integrated shift lights.”
