The original Donkey Kong has been referred to on many different occasions in Mario’s lifetime. Since the iconic plumber started his career, it’s no surprise that Nintendo wants to pay tribute to it. Donkey Kong is already in games like Nintendo Land and as a stage in Super Smash Bros., and is also the basis for the Mario spinoff series Mario teen Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong has gained a legacy over the years as the starting point for Mario, and is still one of Nintendo’s most iconic games.

Donkey Kong is not the only Mario entry that Super Mario 64 pay tribute to one of the two. After collecting all 120 stars, he can find Yoshi at the top of Peach’s castle. From both of these references it is clear that Super Mario 64 was made as a tribute to previous Mario titles.
