Study shows California exits, with more people leaving the state despite the pandemic

New figures provide further evidence of an exodus from California, showing that an increasing number of people moved out of the Golden State in 2020.

The moving company U-Haul ranked California last on its list of state growth, awarding the distinction as the state with the strongest migration. According to the study, California took last place by a wide margin and replaced Illinois, which last year ranked no.

U-Haul conducted its analysis based on migration patterns and calculated the net profit of its one-way trucks entering a state versus the state.

“People who came to California with one-way U-Haul trucks decreased by more than 12% year-on-year, while departure dropped by more than 10% from 2019,” the company explained, adding. % of all one-way U-Haul traffic during 2020, down from 49.8% the previous year. ‘

The figures also showed that the Bay Area, and San Francisco in particular, was one of the leading regions to be declared a national state of emergency in the months following the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in deviations.

California was number 50 on U-Haul’s annual growth rankings. And the Bay was one of the leading regions that saw an increase in departures.

The 30 most populous U.S. cities have all witnessed more U-Haul trucks departing than the next three months. “This indicated that customers who were able to relocate were generally looking for urban cores for less crowded destinations,” the relocation company said.

U-Haul said San Francisco in 2019 is considered a city with growth, with more than trucks entering. “But by 2020, San Francisco was at the center of the Bay Exodus. Departure was 58% of all one-way U-Haul traffic from March to June,” researchers said, adding that San Jose and Oakland reflect similar trends.

According to the company, the Sacramento Roseville region, San Diego and Stockton are the best destinations for people leaving the Bay. Many of those who choose to leave California altogether have landed in Reno, Las Vegas, Portland, Phoenix and Seattle.

U-Haul also said Tennessee was still a popular destination for many Californians who moved out of the state.

“Tennessee has no income tax and is very business-friendly. There are a lot of jobs. People and companies are taking notice,” said Jeff Porter, U-Haul Company president of Nashville. “Nashville is still growing, and even the era of COVID-19 is not slowing it down. We saw movement before the virus hit, but I think the situation has driven a lot more people from the West Coast to our state,” Porter added.

Tennessee rose to No. 1 among growth states in 2020 (up from the 12th slot last year). Texas was second for growth, followed by Florida.

U-Haul said its growth data provides an effective look at how well states and cities attract and sustain residents.
