Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away to Get a Live Theater Adaptation

In 2022, Studio Ghibli’s Carried will get its first live-action theater adaptation.

This is the first Studio Ghibli film to get a stage adaptation. In 2013, Studio Ghibli and Whole Hog Theater collaborated on a live action Princess Mononoke, which was presented at the New Diorama Theater in London.

This time, the Tony and Olivier award-winning director John Caird (Les Misérables, Nicholas Nickleby, Daddy Long Legs) will pin and stir the adjustment.

Known as Sen na Chihiro In Japan, Carried was released in 2001 and became a huge hit in Japan.

‘I feel so excited and privileged to be working on the very first stage adjustment of Sen na Chihiro, ”Caird said in an official statement. “I have considered Miyazaki Hayao for many years now as one of the leading geniuses of world theater and the greatest proponent of the anime form.”

‘I probably worked on it for a thousand hours Sen na Chihiro and look forward to spending thousands more, ”he said.

Both Kamishiraishi and Kanna Hashimoto is both starring Chihiro. Mone is perhaps best known for her work in the anime Your name while Hashimoto starred in a series of films and TV.

‘We, Hayao and I, both like John’s vision. He is a person we can trust, ”said Studio Ghibli’s Toshio Suzuki, who produced the original film. “I look forward to seeing Chihiro grow on stage under his leadership.”

The stage version of Carried debuted in February 2022 at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo, Japan and lasts until March. The production will goes on the road to Osaka (April), Fukuoka (May), Sapporo (June) and Nagoya (June and July).
