To celebrate NASA’s landing in rovers, Krispy Kreme planned to launch a limited edition of the Mars donut on Thursday – to sell for one day only.
The rare celestial event was meant to be characterized by a rare sphere of oil, shaped to resemble the red planet itself – caramel-dipped and filled with chocolate cream, topped with a red vortex resembling Mars.
“It’s even sprinkled with chocolate chip cookie crumbs for that authentic dusty Mars touch,” CNN wrote.
Unfortunately, it seems like humans were never meant to fly so close to Mars. Person Street had a number of customers waiting for the limited edition, one-day treat. Once they sold out, the donuts were gone.
Several places around the Triangle were completely sold out before noon, without getting more stock.
Disappointed and upset customers call a customer service line from Krispy Kreme all day, according to a service representative.
The issue, according to officials, is the weather.
Weather issues have an impact on the delivery of donuts with limited edition, meaning some stores have received it, and others have not. The stores that did get it, according to officials, quickly ran out and have no way to get any more.
Officials said the problem was compounded by excited customers looking for secondary locations for Mars donuts, which overloaded local stores that had just enough stock for their own customer base and could not manage the extra customers.
Krispy Kreme customer service said they are very sorry about the weather affecting the availability of the Mars donut. Local executives who spoke by telephone said they felt terrible about having so many disappointed customers.
