Store employee shot while chasing suspect in shoplifting near 32nd Street and Indian School Road

PHOENIX – Phoenix police are investigating a shooting at a business near 32nd Street and Indian School Road.

Just after 9 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a mall for reports of a shooting.

Responding officers at the scene say ABC15 fired during an attempted robbery outside the Howard’s Ace hardware store.

Phoenix police said an employee was trying to stop a shoplifter because they were both running outside the store.

A man standing outside saw the chase and fired a weapon. According to police, he shot at the shoplifter, but missed and beat the employee.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. He apparently sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The shoplifter left the scene before police arrived. It is unclear whether he was identified.

The person who fired the shots remained at the scene and is working with police. It is unclear whether charges will be filed.

The investigation continues.
