Steve Wojciechowski fired Marquette Golden Eagles after seven seasons

Head coach Steve Wojciechowski is out with Marquette after seven seasons, the school announced Friday.

The Golden Eagles finished 13-14 and 8-11 overall in Big East play last season.

“After a thorough evaluation of our program over the past week, which included several conversations with Steve, I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for a new leader of our program,” said Bill Scholl, athletic director of Marquette, said. “I am confident that our history of success and our commitment to the development of young men who are leaders inside and outside the track will attract the highest quality of coaching talent. I want to thank Steve for his dedication to our student-athletes, and “We wish Steve, Lindsay, Jack and Charlie all the best for the future.”

Wojciechowski has gone to two NCAA tournaments in his seven seasons with the Golden Eagles, losing each time in the first round. Last season, they would have had a third NCAA tournament behind the star game of Markus Howard, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This season, Marquette achieved notable victories over Wisconsin and Creighton in December, but was unable to build the rest of the way. A stretch of six losses in seven games in the middle of the Big East game ended the Golden Eagles’ NCAA hopes, despite winning four of five to end the season.

In seven seasons, Wojciechowski played 128-95 and 59-68 in the league overall.

The school said on Friday that it would immediately begin a national search for a replacement.
