Steph Curry leads NBA in wins over substitute, making early MVP case

In order for the Warriors to compete for a playoff game this season without Klay Thompson, it was widely believed that an MVP-type campaign by Steph Curry would be needed. Well, of course it’s still pretty early, but so far Curry has only done it.

His career high of 62 points in Golden State’s 137-122 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday is the most impressive individual performance of any player in the league so far. He followed that up with another 30 points and nearly triple in 31 minutes in the 137-106 victory over the Sacramento Kings, and he almost dug himself out of the hole he created with a typically poor start to the season. .

Through seven games, Curry now averages 32.0 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game on 46.3 percent shooting from the field, 36.9 percent from the three-point range and 98.2 percent from the free-throw line. His regression to the average should just continue, meaning another 50/40/90 season is within reach.

That would certainly be a strong footnote in Curry’s potential candidate for MVP. Leading the NBA in substitute wins (WARP) would be an even stronger argument, and that’s exactly what he’s done so far.

The names on the list are some of the best players on the planet, and it would certainly not be surprising if one of them becomes the 2020-21 NBA MVP. However, there is only one name upstairs, and that is Curry.

He and the Warriors are about ten percent through the regular season. Of course, there is still a long way to go, but the dual NBA MVP may still need to create space on his trophy shelf.
