Steam Extends Xbox and PS5 Controller Support

If you, like me, prefer to play your computer games with a controller sent out of the box of the home console, good news is coming. Steam is testing extensive features for PS5 and Xbox controllers, including additional customization and button cards. I’m still shaking out a pretty old Xbox One controller myself, but by the time I upgrade, it sounds like all the new features are just ready and waiting for me when I turn one on.

Earlier this week, Steam outlined some new features that you can try out if you switch to the Steam Client Beta branch. Xbox controllers make the most profits this time around with the ability to re-bind the share button on the Xbox Series X controller and bind the fine pads at the top of the back of the Elite controller in your control configurations.

They are also testing support for more than four Xbox controllers. I do not know about you, but there are currently no more than four Xbox controllers or creatures that they can use in my household. Maybe by the end of 2021, right?

PS5 controllers get a slight nod for the time being with the option to turn the LED light on or off on the gamepad or turn it on only when multiple controllers are connected. Steam also improved support for PS5 controllers late last year, not long after the new system was launched.

There’s a little more in Steam’s update on support for the Wooting Two keyboard, HOTAS, and G15 devices.

If you’d like to plug in your entire family of Xbox controllers and see what happens, you can opt for the beta in the account section of your Steam settings menu.
