Starlink FCC application unveils plans for satellite internet in moving vehicles

The idea that Teslas can be connected to the internet via Starlink may soon be realized. SpaceX recently filed an application with the FCC to extend the satellite service to ‘moving vehicles, vessels and aircraft’. The application comes not long after Musk on Twitter nodded for a Starlink ‘Mini’ that can provide internet connectivity on the internet.

In its FCC application, SpaceX aimed to obtain a blanket license that allows the use of end-of-end earth stations for the implementation of the name Vehicle Mounted Earth Stations (“VMESs”), Earth Stations on Vessels (“ESVs”) and Earth Stations on board Aircraft (“ESAAs”). These stations, along with the name Earth Stations in Motion (“ESIMs”), are enabled to provide internet connections to moving vehicles such as cars, ships or even airplanes.

SpaceX Services seeks authorization to deploy and operate these earth stations (1) as VMES throughout the United States and its territories, (2) as ESVs in the territorial waters of the United States and in international waters worldwide, and (3) as ESAAs on US-registered aircraft operated worldwide and non-US-registered aircraft operating in US airspace, ”SpaceX noted.

SpaceX has further expanded and noted that Starlink ESIMs can be invaluable as internet users these days become increasingly reluctant to forgo internet connection. SpaceX said that ultimately the idea of Starlink being used to move vehicles is a logical extension of the core services of the satellite internet system.

‘Users are no longer willing to give up connections, whether they are driving a truck across the country, transporting a cargo ship from Europe to a US port or a domestic or international flight. To meet this demand, SpaceX has deployed an innovative, cost-effective and spectrum-efficient satellite system that can provide robust broadband service to customers around the world, especially in unserviced and underserved areas.

‘SpaceX has already secured the US government for the space station components of its NGSO system. This application takes the next step by seeking authority for ESIMs enabling the expansion of the network of homes and offices to vehicles, vessels and aircraft. The operation under the requested license will promote competition in the broadband services market in motion, to the benefit of drivers, ship operators and air travelers in the United States and abroad. ”

Starlink’s ESIMs will benefit numerous entities, one of which will be Tesla, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and energy company. Tesla’s electric cars are connected to the internet for features such as video streaming and updates over the air, and today the company even offers a “Premium Connectivity” service. With Starlink’s ability to connect to the internet with a moving vehicle, Tesla no longer has to rely on existing mobile internet providers for its cars.
