Standard music player can be set up on Spotify in iOS 14.5 beta

Apple finally offered the opportunity to introduce Spotify as your default music player for Siri commands. It was previously only available on HomePods and was a feature we asked for in 2019.

The new behavior appears in the beta of iOS 14.5. The first time you ask Siri to play something, all the streaming services you have installed on your device are listed and you are asked which one you want to use. Once you have done that, Siri will provide the service for subsequent requests …

This feature was first noticed by Reddit users (via MacRumors), and also includes podcasts. Users without the Apple Music app installed report that it’s by default the music player they use.

‘I just told Siri to play a song and it started on Spotify without any further questions. I removed Apple Music. ”

‘I did not install the music application and only asked permission to access YouTube Music. Thereafter, each request was sent directly to YTM. ”

‘I asked Siri to play an artist without specifying Spotify, and he told me he needed access to my Spotify account and asked if I could grant access. I answered yes and played the song. Now every command controls Spotify, even if it is not mentioned. Good move. ”

“It works even when I ask it to play my favorite songs, and it’s just going straight to Spotify to play the playlist, very cool.”

However, users note that it is currently buggy.

“It simply came to our notice then. I tried it and it did not make me appear. Just go straight to Apple Music. ”

‘Yes, it’s a bit contradictory, as with Siri. Just now I asked it to play ‘Blue hotel’, after which it offered me to choose, then I turned it down and asked it again and it played straight on Apple Music, and when I did it the third once asked, it asked me to access my Pocket Casts data, which is a podcast app and of course has no music at all. ”

Apple has made a number of moves to stop antitrust actions. With iOS 14 last year, users were able to change their default web browser and email application as part of five changes made due to antitrust issues. The changes were made after it was suggested that the company was abusing its dominant position to prejudice competing programs.

Apple has kept this one quiet so far. It is noteworthy that there is no user interface for this in Settings yet, so it is possible that the company did not intend to release this feature in iOS 14.5. Either way, it will make many people happy once it is fully available.
