Stadium projects included Savage Planet 2, Kojima title

Following the public announcement of the closure of Stadia Games & Entertainment, ongoing reports have revealed further details on what the studio is working out. Apparently, Stadia’s now-canceled first-party projects included a multiplayer action game known as ‘Frontier’, a sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet 2, and an exclusive game from the legendary Kojima.

Update 2/28: A Google Representative Talking To GamesRadar says the VGC report was ‘inaccurate and reported hearsay as a fact’, adding that the allegations about Kojima and Yu Suzuki ‘projects’ of the report were not true, saying that Google has nothing to do with Kojima or Yu not, nor did he announce anything. Sazuki. ”

A report of VideoGamesChronicle claims that he reveals some of the major projects that Stadia Games & Entertainment, SG&E, had in the works.

In the first place, Google’s game studios apparently had an important action multiplayer game codenamed “Frontier”. The team that developed the game was apparently led by Francois Pelland, the former producer of Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Not much is known about the game, but the team working on it only found out about the cancellation in February, probably on the day it became known.

In addition, Google’s acquisition of Typhoon Studios would have a sequel to the hit Journey to the Savage Planet, which made its Stadia debut this month. Apparently the game was “far grander” in scale with fully animated cut-out scenes. Again, the team here only found out about the cancellation of the project, along with the public announcement.

Stadia Games & Entertainment is also working with some third-party studios to develop exclusive games for the Stadia platform. It has been publicly known for some time that Harmonix has been working with SG&E on an exclusive, and apparently the musical was ‘virtually complete’. In response to the VGC reported, Harmonix’s CEO claimed that the game had not been canceled, nor denied rumors that the game was having problems with the music license. The title will apparently still be released, even if it ends up on another platform with Steve Janiak saying:

While Google has changed its strategy, we remain incredibly excited about what we have been working on for Stadia, and if the project is not released for Stadia, we will take it to other platforms

Finally, the report also mentions that Google worked with Kojima Productions, the studio behind Death Stranding, Silent Hills, and Metal Gear Solid, on an episodic horror game. Apparently the studio wanted to innovate in the cloud game space, but Stadia VP Phil Harrison blocked the project comes to light. Hideo Kojima in particular said he was ‘quite angry’ about the cancellation of a major project, but it is unclear if this is the same project that blocked Harrison.

It’s pretty obvious that Google had quite a few big projects going on with SG&E, which only added to the confusion that the company decided to pull the plug before any of these projects could come close to completion. If only things had worked out differently.
