Sri Lanka arrest ‘Mrs World’ after fracas on stage, assault | Sri Lanka News

Jury was detained for taking the crown from Silva minutes after she was declared Ms Sri Lanka 2020 and damaged the venue.

Police in Colombo have arrested the current Mrs World on charges of assaulting a fracas on stage in which she pulled off the crown of the new Mrs Sri Lanka.

Caroline Jurie pulled off the crown of Pushpika de Silva a few minutes after she was declared Mrs Sri Lanka 2020 during a gala at Colombo’s Nelum Pokuna Theater on Sunday.

The jury was the previous year Mrs. Sri Lanka and won the Mrs World competition.

De Silva needed hospital treatment after the incident, seen by stunned spectators in a packed theater as well as a live social media audience.

‘We have Jury and [her associate] Chula Manamendra in connection with a charge of assault and damage to Nelum Pokuna [theatre], ”Said senior police officer Ajith Rohana.

De Silva told reporters outside the Cinnamon Gardens police station in Colombo on Thursday that she was ready to drop charges if Jurie apologized, but she refused.

“I tried to end it outside of court, but she refused,” de Silva said. “I can forgive, but not forget.”

There were no immediate comments from Jurie or her lawyer.

Police sources told AFP news agency the trial is likely to take place next week and Jurie and her co-worker, who crashed on stage on Sunday, could be granted bail later on Thursday.

The incident

Jury came on stage and claimed that de Silva was divorced and therefore not eligible for the prize.

Participants must be married to qualify for the title. De Silva was estranged from her husband, but they are still legally married.

Organizers said they were demanding compensation from Jurie for damages to the stage and dressing rooms behind the stage where several mirrors were smashed.

Jury was also accused by organizers of bringing dishonor to the event.

The local franchisee for the competition, Chandimal Jayasinghe, said they were “deeply upset and sorry” for Jurie’s behavior.
