Springfield’s mega COVID-19 vaccine event sets the state record on the second day and celebrates more than 4,000 Missourians

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – More than 4,000 people were vaccinated on Friday on the second day of Springfield’s mass vaccination event.

The event sets a record for most single-dose COVID-19 vaccines administered in one day. Health leaders on Friday administered 4,385 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Hammons Student Center at Missouri State University.

The record comes on the same day that Missouri is eligible for vaccine for all adults. It broke the one-day record of 3,999 vaccines administered in St Charles County earlier this year.

More than 6,100 people were fully vaccinated over two days, failing to meet the province’s initial goal of 10,000. The final vaccinations ended around 5pm on Friday.

People started submitting early Friday morning and doubling the total vaccinations by 11:00 on Thursday

“(It was) definitely busy,” said Jon Mooney, assistant director for the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. ‘The first day is open to all Missourians, 18 and older, for this occasion. We use Johnson & Johnson, so it’s one dose, right, it’s just come in, you take care of everything in one step. ”

That’s exactly what Marji McAllister did on Friday morning.

“I came here around 10:15, my appointment was at 10:30, I think I was done at 10:35,” McAllister said. “The line never stopped moving, it’s very fast and easy … no problems at all.”

This event is another step in the fight against COVID-19.

“Our hospital partners, inenters across the city, are still doing their normal operations,” Mooney said. “It’s above and beyond that, right, so it adds a lot more capacity for our community to be protected from the virus, which is ultimately the solution.”

As part of that, Missouri State University played a helping hand.

“We are a public university,” said David Hall, director of university security. ‘It’s part of our mission to serve the public, and I think it’s one of the clear ways we can show that we’re part of the community, that we’re here as a resource to help. ”

Springfield’s health leaders say the event will help Greene County get closer to its goal of fully vaccinating 25% of the population by April 16.

“They can get so many people here in one day. I like this one because it’s the one dose, ‘McAllister said. “So I do not have to worry about coming back and getting another dose.”

“It was just rewarding for us to be able to help,” Hall said.

The final score for the two-day event was 6,131 people vaccinated. The 4,385 vaccinated Friday make it the largest single-dose vaccination event in Missouri to date.

Jon Mooney and the Springfield-Greene County Department of Health said leaders have an emergency plan to get the remaining doses in their arms early next week.

According to the Department of Health in Springfield-Greene County, the remaining stock of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine from the mega-event will be used in the Department of Health’s outreach campaigns and distributed to other local health care partners for use in vaccination clinics.

The Springfield-Greene County Department of Health and Missouri State University partnered with the following organizations to hold the two-day event.

  • Ozarks Technical Community College
