Spiders make a mass exodus amid widespread flooding in southeastern Australia.

Heavy rainfall over the past week has forced thousands of people out of their homes in New South Wales, and hundreds of others have had to be rescued from the rising waters, officials said Monday.

But people are not the only ones fleeing the floods – swarms of insects have also tried to reach dry ground, according to videos and photos posted on social media.

Melanie Williams, from the NSW city of Macksville, posted a clip on Facebook on Saturday of hundreds of arachnids crawling on her garage door.

“Sooooo many SPIDES of the floods,” she wrote.

Another video, posted by Shenea Varley by TikTok user this past weekend, showed spiders clinging to a fence while struggling to escape floodwaters.

“There were also villains, ants, basically every insect, crickets – everyone was just trying to get away from the floodwaters,” Varley told The Guardian Australia after a visit to Western Sydney.

“My husband picked it up because I did not want to go near there,” she added. “When he stood still, he climbed spiders on his legs.”

Kinchela Creek resident Matt Lovenfosse told CNN on Tuesday that rain was still falling and that the floodwaters were getting closer to his family’s home.

“In the morning it should be inside and the spiders will be all over the house,” he told the outlet, adding, “the trees are full of snakes.”
