Just one week into the season, Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie had a torn ACL during a game against the Charlotte Hornets. Depending on what happens over the next few weeks, the injury may have ended not only Dinwiddie’s season, but also his time in Brooklyn.
As they want to make some moves before the deadline, the Nets are shopping in Dinwiddie, According to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. We do not have too many more details than that. However, the Detroit Pistons are one of the interested teams, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
On the one hand, it’s a bit cruel to swap an injured player, but it’s not surprising that the Nets are investigating what they can get for Dinwiddie. They kept their roster to complete the James Harden trade, and Dinwiddie is one of the only players still willing to move and that other teams might be interested in acquiring.
Then there is the fact that Dinwiddie will not be playing again this season, and that the Nets are not deep yet. If they can make Dinwiddie a useful role player, it could give their title chances a big boost. And finally, Dinwiddie has a player option for next season. If he decides and hits an unlimited free agency, the Nets could end up losing him for free.
Of course, this is just a rumor at this point, but it’s not hard to see why the Nets are investigating the idea. It’s also not hard to see why the Pistons would be interested. They are in the process of moving on to a complete rebuild, and there has been a lot of brainstorming about their out-of-season decisions.
One thing that is clear, however, is that they are buying cheap players who are looking for a bigger role or a second chance. Dinwiddie fits that profile perfectly. He suffered a serious injury and is not going to be a major part of the Nets’ backfield as Kyrie Irving and James Harden are in town. This could create an opportunity for the Pistons.
We will of course have to wait to see what happens here, but it is possible that a Nets-Pistons Dinwiddie trade could help all involved.
