South Florida supports coldest night of the year

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. South Florida is in the grip of a cold moment.

This is the kind of weather that heated car seats are worthy of. It is also the type of weather that is known to stop iguanas in their tracks.

The stage is set for the provinces of Miami-Dade and Broward to see the coldest temperatures so far this winter season. As the clouds remain clear, northwest winds carry cold air over the region.

The temperature dropped to South Florida on Wednesday morning until the 1940s and is expected to heat up slightly during the day with highs in the mid-60s.

Chief meteorologist Betty Davis said Tuesday: “Scattered clouds Wednesday night and lighter, northerly winds just need to provide the right atmospheric conditions to bring the temperature down even lower.”

This is when Miami-Dade and Broward can reach the coldest temperatures so far this season. Miami could drop to 43 degrees on Thursday morning. That would exceed the 47-degree temperatures recorded on December 26, 2020, the city’s coldest temperature so far this winter. It would not be surprising to see thirties in some inland neighborhoods.

On Wednesday morning, Miami recorded a slightly warmer temperature of 52 degrees.

Will it be cold enough for iguanas to rain? Forecasters of the national weather service remind Floridians: “Iguanas are cold-blooded. They slow down or become immobile as the temperature drops in the 40s. They can fall from trees, but they are not dead. ”

The cold weather comes to an end on Friday. Seasonal temperatures return with lows near 60 degrees and highs in the upper 70s across South Florida.

The homeless voice was making its rounds in Broward County as temperatures began to drop. The outreach team provided blankets, gloves, shoes and meals to homeless people who are fragile or afraid to go to cold weather shelters due to COVID-19.

The team also checked vitamins to ensure people stay healthy during the cold.

“Many shelters do not take people because of Covid,” said Sean Cononie, director of the homeless voice. “They do not have enough hospital rooms. What you provide is therefore a necessity. Mask, hand cleaners, sleeping bags, blankets, thermal sleeping bags, blankets and PPE. ”
