Sources – Mitchell Robinson, New York Knicks, undergoing hand surgery, missed 4-6 weeks

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will undergo surgery on his broken right hand and is expected to miss four to six weeks, sources told ESPN. Robinson sustained a fourth metacarpal fracture.

Dr. Michelle Carlson at New York Special Surgery Hospital will perform the procedure next week, sources said.

Robinson, 22, sustained the injury in a win over Washington on Friday night.

In his absence, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson would mainly play the middle position. Julius Randle and rookie Obi Toppin can also give New York minutes there, Thibodeau said.

Robinson scored 8.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in a career-high 28.8 minutes per game for the Knicks. After Noel started in the preseason, Thibodeau Robinson made the frontrunner to start the season and started him in all 27 games so far.

The Knicks have an option on Robinson’s contract for the 2021-2022 season that they can pursue, which keeps him under contract for $ 1.8 million, which will make him an unlimited free agent after the 2021-22 season.
