Source: Washington to appoint Martin Mayhew; 49ers to get 2023 draft choice

The 49ers promote diversity in executive positions and this has been beneficial in more ways than one.

49ers chief executive Martin Mayhew is set to become the next general manager of the Washington Football Team, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area on Thursday.

ESPN’s John Keim first reported news that Mayhew has been appointed by Washington.

Mayhew has spent the past four seasons with the 49ers, two as vice president of player staff and the previous two years (2017-’18) as senior staff manager of the team.

Prior to his 49ers career, Mayhew spent time with the New York Giants (2016) and Detroit Lions (2001-2015) as executive. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1988 as a baseline before playing for Washington (1898-1992) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993-1996), where he played alongside John Lynch, general manager of the 49ers.

Earlier this week, former 49ers defense coordinator Robert Saleh was officially announced as the head coach of the New York Jets. The 49ers will be compensated for both promotions from minority candidates to executive roles as part of the NFL’s effort to promote diversity in hiring.

For each appointment of a minority candidate to an executive role, the original club will receive two third-round compensatory selections that will take place over two consecutive seasons. The 49ers will receive one choice in 2021 and the second in 2022 for Saleh as head coach.

As a club two minority candidates appointed over one year will only receive them one third compensatory choice for the second lease. The choice would be in the third consecutive season, which will take place for the 49ers in 2023.

(If Mayhew had been appointed in 2022, the 49ers would have received two compensatory third-round picks that would take place in 2023 and 2024.)

This choice is in addition to the compensatory choice that a club will regularly receive for the loss of free agents. So there will be more than the standard 256 draft picks in the following NFL drafts.
