Sounders FC sign Fredy Montero

SEATTLE, WAS. – Seattle Sounders FC announced today that they have signed forward Fredy Montero. The Colombian returned to Seattle, where he played from 2009-2012, and won Sounders FC’s Golden Boot each of the club’s first three MLS seasons, playing 47 goals and 34 assists in the regular season. After playing abroad in Colombia, Portugal and China, Montero spent three of the last four seasons with Vancouver, scoring 26 goals and 14 shots for Whitecaps FC. Montero signed a one-year deal with club options in 2022 and 2023 and will join Sounders FC before the season following the mandatory quarantine and Test protocols.

“Fredy is a prolific forward who has proven himself in MLS and abroad, except that he still holds a number of club records here,” said Sounders FC general manager and president of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “When good players return to Seattle, it speaks to the strong culture we have built. I look forward to bringing him into the group and seeing what he can contribute to our attack. ”

Montero (33) first joined the Deportivo Cali of Colombia at Sounders FC before the club’s first MLS season in 2009. He was the leader of the Rave Green in the score every year from 2009-2011 and has a two-digit goal total scored in each of his four. seasons in Seattle. Montero’s 47 goals and 34 assists for Seattle in the regular season are tied with Clint Dempsey and Mauro Rosales, respectively, and his 60 goals in all competitions is a franchise record.

Following the 2012 season, Montero entered into several loans with the Millonarios of Colombia and the Sporting CP of Portugal, of which he joined a permanent switch in January 2014. Montero scored 27 goals over three seasons in Portugal before moving to the Chinese club. Tianjin Tigers FC, where he scored nine goals in the 2016 campaign. After a six-goal season of 13 goals while on loan at Vancouver in 2017, Montero played another season with Sporting CP in 2018 before returning to Whitecaps FC for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

With the signing of Montero, the current rankings of Sounders FC come to 23 players. The club started its pre-season in 2021 on Starfire Sports this week, and the MLS season would open the weekend of April 17th.
