Sony’s Airpeak drone debuts at CES 2021

During its keynote address at CES 2021, Sony gave us a look at its very first drone: Airpeak. Since Sony is essentially synonymous with sharp and cinematic image quality, it makes sense that Airpeak will only cater to professional photographers and videographers when it launches in the spring.

The drone project was initially announced in November via press release, but Sony clearly wanted to wait for a special occasion like CES to debut it in all its glory.

Details are still scarce, but Sony has revealed that the Airpeak is the smallest drone to mount and fly a DSLR or a mirrorless camera (specifically its own range of Alpha mirrorless cameras). With Sony’s drone, content creators can use more heavy cameras to record aerial footage rather than relying on built-in cameras equipped with most drones.

Sony says that even with a more sturdy camera on it, Airpeak is still “capable of dynamically filming and giving accurate, stable flight.” To prove this, the company also provided footage of Airpeak in action.

Throughout the video you can see Airpeak taking aerial photos during a road test of Sony’s Vision-S – the concept car on which it was randomly launched past few years CES.

Despite its CES debut, Airpeak is still a work in progress. In the run-up to the spring launch, Sony plans to continue testing it and do so through the course of the case by ‘participating in co-creation activities’ in an effort to get as much feedback as possible for to get the final version.

With the amount of time Sony took to finally launch a drone, let’s hope the wait is worth it.
